Business Tips : 5 Tips on Budgeting

By SCORE
  1. Think of a budget as a useful tool—a written financial plan that helps you set goals and measure progress.
  2. Start by coming up with a sales revenue target. Make it your best estimate.
  3. Based on past experience, estimate your cost of goods sold (e.g., 70 percent of sales) and subtract it from the sales revenue to come up with your estimated gross margin.
  4. Forecast variable expenses (items such as travel and commissions that vary according to the level of sales) and fixed expenses (items like taxes and rent that stay the same, regardless of sales). Subtract these expenses from your gross margin to arrive at your estimated net income (before federal taxes).
  5. Break your annual budget into quarters and monitor your progress every three months to detect problems and make corrections.

Get A Solar Contractors License In California

By Fida H

Solar energy has consistently grown 33% in the past thirty years within 1979-2010. It is projected to be over 40% for this decade. With an estimated 32 GW of solar power installed globally, 7.2 GW was installed last year alone, according to John Addison, publisher of the Clean Fleet Report.

Solar energy is becoming more marketable by the day, and now represents a large portion of new construction related jobs. If you are a contractor or interested in becoming a contractor, be a part of this rapidly growing industry by getting your solar contractors license.

The basic steps below highlight how people with solar training can get a solar contractor's license in the state of California. It is important to understand that processes slightly differ from state to state. Thus, Licenses acquired in the State of California may not be recognized in another state.

Step 1 - Go to State License Board Website

Visit the California State License Board website at cslb.ca.gov.

Step 2 - Confirm License Classification

The classification for a Solar Contractors license is Class "C", which is for specialty contractors. According to the California State License Board, there are 41 separate "C" license classifications for contractors whose construction work or primary contracting business requires specialized skills, building trades, or crafts. The exact "C" license for solar is C-46. C-46 is the license classification that should be applied for to obtain a solar contractors license.

Step 3 - Be Qualified

Make sure you qualify. The state of California requires journeyman level experience through apprenticeship training or college education, and an actual business entity. Without prior solar training and experience you will not be considered qualified.

Applicants should have at least four years of experience in solar. Nonetheless, the California State License Board may grant up to three years of credit towards the four year requirement for completed education and/or apprenticeship programs in the solar specialty. Education can include a Bachelors degree, certificate, and credited solar courses. Thus, if you don't have any prior experience in solar, you may begin by taking solar training.

Step 4 - Thoroughly Complete Application

Complete the appropriate application form and submit it along with a nonrefundable application fee. Application forms must be fully complete! Incomplete applications will be rejected. Wait four to six weeks for your application to be processed. Once processed you will be sent an examination date. In some cases it can take much longer than four to six weeks. Completing and accurately filling out all the requested information within the application form helps reduce the processing time. The application form can be printed at the California State License Board website.

Step 5 - Wait & Prepare

Generally, it takes approximately four to six weeks before your application is processed and a notice is sent to you to appear for examination. Use the waiting period to refresh your knowledge through study tools, or even attending related review courses and additional solar training.

Step 6 - Take the Test

Once approved you should receive your examination date and location. Testing locations are distributed within eight cities. These cities are: San Diego, San Bernardino, Buena Park, Inglewood, Ventura, Oakland, Sacramento and Fresno. You will be assigned to the nearest location of your business address.

If this is your first contractor license examination, you will have to take two exams. The first exam is the general law & business examination and the second will be the trade examination. In this case your trade will be solar. The examinations will each be given two hours and thirty minutes to complete, making it a total of five hours.

Failure to show up will result in a $50 rescheduling fee. You are granted eighteen months after the approval of your application to achieve a passing grade. Within this time period, you can take the exam as many times as necessary until you pass.

Step 7 - Wait for Score

Wait to receive your score. If you failed you are provided with a breakdown of your percentage score for each section of the examination and can reschedule to take the examination again. If you passed, you are simply told you passed in the letter. A certificate and your license number will then be sent to you.

In conclusion, experience plays a major role in qualifying for a Solar Contractors License. If you do not meet the required experience but you're interested in getting a solar contractors License in the state of California, start with a certificate program. There are great renewable energy institutions that offer solar training certification. As mentioned earlier, education in your trade can be credited towards the four years of required experience. Don't waste anymore time, register to a solar training certification program today!

Getting Your First Job - Interview Tips For Teenagers

You can prepare for your first interview through practicing with friends and family. Don't get discouraged if you don't pass the real interview when it comes up. Often, employers will do phone interviews to screen prospective applicants out.

You will learn what to say and what not to say with each interview. It just takes a little practice and confidence in oneself. It has been said that it takes about ten interviews to land one job. This may or may not be true for you, depending upon the job you want to get into.

As a teen, you are presented with many challenges. The biggest challenge though, is in getting to know what kind of person you really are. This will come through time, through your own growth. People usually don't change personally, but some of their interests will change as they get older.

For example, a career chosen as a teen may not serve him well in later years, because he will have matured. That same career may then not be as interesting. Then, it may be time for a change of careers. Many who are working do not like their careers, but may not know what else they want to do for a living.

Teen Quizzes can help you locate a field of interest. To be happy in a career, one has to be interested in it, and have a passion for working in that job. If one knows which careers he has an interested in, all he needs to do is choose one that fits his personality, natural abilities, and aptitude.

Signs That You Are Being Bullied

In every 10 workers, one of them has been bullied in their career.

Yes, in every workplace there are bullies who victimize other workers simply because of their false belief to maintain control or status quo, or when they are feeling" threatened" of a smarter neophyte, or simply because of some psychological problems they may have been suffering since childhood. Just like children bullies, these professionals whom respected by their peers and subordinates alike have this aberrant behaviors which should be checked asap by their superiors or managers before it could wreck havoc to the company.

A victim of bullying must say foul! and do the necessary steps to vindicate him-her/self and have the bully faced the consequences of his/her acts. However, if the company has a culture of tolerating bullies for one reason or another, better for the victim to leave the company asap and seek one with sane principles and live a life sans the presence of a pest bully.

Bullying is a form of an abuse. A victim suffers tremendous psychological and physical harm. In fact, a study reveals that some health-harming manifestations such as high blood pressure, heart attack, depression, etc. are common scenario to bullied individual where as a victim he/she suffers tremendous emotional torture, especially if is what we call " mobbing" or simply put, a group of bullies picking on one victim till the he/she opts to resign.

The author had to walk the plank once due to "mobbing" and now trying to share wisdom from the said experience. Thanks to my bullies; however, sorry to disappoint you guys, am back in the arena and wiser not committing same mistake again.

Common signs that you are being bullied, as what I experienced then:

1. You dread Mondays... you do not have the energy to go to work. You feel sick...as if you did not have a good night sleep, too lazy to move and worse, you feign sick just to evade your tormentor even for a day.

2. They yell at you -- in front of other people--during meeting as if you were a slave and they were your masters.

3. They exclude you in meeting and other activities giving you feeling isolated as if they were against you... for no apparent reason at all. Well, this is the price to pay for being young or smart or kind --sort of you are cursed for being given such enviable characteristic.

4. Always the last person to know about changes in the company's policies, etc. making you look naive at your co-workers' assessment.

5. Your tormentor spreading rumors discrediting you, say assaulting your reputations and in the process, gain control over the social environment for his/her own advantage, thus giving him/her the feeling of superiority and the like.

6. They are talking behind your back ( means you are two steps ahead ) and when you are present, they have innuendos, etc. aimed at you.

Subtle ways of bullying someone is giving a victim a feeling that he/she is nothing compared to the tormentor by giving one condescending or insulting look, and sans giving other people around a hint that bullying is happening. Well, others are just clueless, or simply naive about it. And they will be surprised when the victim opted a resignation than prolonging the agony of being bullied sans seeking help from indifferent co-workers.

Bullying is a kind of cruelty; sometimes, the tormentor does not know that he/she has been a bully to someone, sometime, somewhere... lest he/she is a psychopath bully; no remorse or a tinge of guilt is seen from him/her. Beware of this kind of bully; a snake clothed in a man's suit ready to devour an unsuspecting victim in the workplace.

Would you rather be a victim or a witness to bullying? Which would you prefer?

Leader Productivity Vs The Fatigue Demon: Six Steps to Keep Fatigue From Eroding Your Productivity

By Geraldine Markel, Ph.D.

job, jobs, career

Bookmark and Share

Fatigue plays a critical part in the performance of current or aspiring leaders: it impairs leadership effectiveness, inhibiting productivity and excellence. If the leader of an organization functions without energy and enthusiasm, she or he is not a good role model. Any negative effects of the leader's performance can cascade down through the organization.

Fatigue operates as an insidious barrier to leader productivity. Like a mysterious and demonic force, Fatigue saps the energy required to engage in critical leadership functions. Leaders need stamina, mental energy, and enthusiasm to:

• Spark their creativity: to think out of the box, see the big picture, and gain long-term perspective.
• Engage in analytical thinking, problem solving, and decision making.
• Become lifelong learners. Who can read, remember, and apply information when they are too tired to focus and concentrate?
• Persevere under stressful conditions and be resilient when a crisis strikes.

Is the Fatigue Demon undermining your ability to be a leader? Has Fatigue teamed up with some of the other Demons of Distraction in your life, such as Technology, Stress, Illness/Medication, Others, Activities, Spaces or Unruly Mind?

The most common cause of fatigue is poor sleep or lack of sleep. There are between 50 and 70 million Americans living tired lives, with about 40 million of those reporting some type of sleep disorder. Unquestionably, exhaustion has a negative influence on attention, memory, mood, safety, and general performance. For example, driving under the influence of fatigue can be as devastating as driving under the influence of alcohol-and you can't be inspiring at work if you don't make it there safely.

Fatigue can also be related to leader burnout, a particular problem in the "new normal" climate of technological and economic realities. For example, there are estimates that 247 billion emails are sent per day. How many of these are delivered to a leader's mailbox? Receiving hundreds of messages each day is overwhelming and often leaves no down time. The artificial sense of urgency generated by message technology further erodes the amount and quality of sleep. One study reported that over 65 percent of respondents answered email in bed, while over 45 percent placed devices (cell phones, for example) on their nightstands--and kept the audible message alerts switched on all night long.

Regardless of the reasons underlying fatigue, feeling tired makes you more vulnerable to other Demons of Distraction. For example, the more tired you feel, the more vulnerable you are to stress and its effects. This can leave you more apt to procrastinate or avoid a tedious task, causing even more stress. Therefore, any improvement in sleep will help reduce your vulnerability to stress, and any improvement in stress management will help you be more energized and focused.

How do you know if the Fatigue Demon has become a serious threat to your leadership abilities? Due to the "24/7 Warrior" mentality in the business world, leaders may not even be aware of the extent of their fatigue and its effects--but there are telltale signs. Family members or co-workers may be the first to notice:

• Poor emotional regulation as seen with irritation, impatience, or angry outbursts
• Rigid thinking as seen in an all-or-none, now-or-never mentality
• Physical signs including slouching, walking slowly, yawning, or holding your head
• Work slippages including inaccurate, incomplete or missing work
• Forgetfulness, disorganization, inattention, and poor time management

Whether you seek others' input or they volunteer observations on your behavior, don't shoot the messenger. Denial and defensiveness won't help you regain your leadership edge-but the following steps will.

Six Steps to Stop the Downward Spiral of Leader Performance:

Step 1: Increase awareness. Ask, "How often am I running on empty? Is fatigue interfering with creativity, motivation or memory?" Keep a sleep journal; identify any problems such as insomnia, snoring, sleep apnea, etc. Ask, "What is sapping my mental energy?"

Step 2: Take action. Reorganize your sleep routine so you can be better rested. Make sleep a top priority: get to bed earlier. Consider setting an alarm an hour before bedtime as a signal to stop activities and wind down. The bedroom should be a "No Fly Zone" for electronic devices such as email alerts that unnecessarily interrupt sleep.

Step 3: Stop the constant state of overwhelm and stress. As a leader you have the legitimate power to impose the rules; say no nicely, be ruthless about delegating, and take a break or two during the day. Leaders need quiet think-time to analyze and solve problems. One strategy is to impose an electronic lockdown; a specific period of time during which technology does not distract you.

Step 4: Stop multitasking. Don't buy into the myth that it helps you: recent research indicates that it's ineffective to do two things at the same time. It drains your mental energy and leads to inaccuracies.

Step 5: Consider fatigue and safety. When fatigued, don't drive, use power tools, or undertake risky activities such as climbing ladders.

Step 6: Increase the use of exercise and stress management strategies to bolster physical and mental energy, endurance, and resilience.

Sometimes, the simpler a suggestion sounds, the more difficult it is to do. Start with one thing at a time. Even the smallest change can yield positive results.

Opening a Yoga Studio - The Process From A to Z

By Lisa Jenkins

Many yoga teachers love practicing and teaching yoga so much that they decide they want to open up their own practices. While their intentions are positive, the decision to create a new yoga studio in the community is one that requires a great deal of careful consideration, planning and support.

Business Plan

A business plan is the best first stage of planning when deciding to go down the entrepreneurial path. A business plan is a document that includes your vision, as well as the financial, marketing, staff, sales, hiring, bookkeeping, start-up and maintenance aspects that are involved in building and sustaining your dream.

Setting Goals

When writing a business plan, the vision statement is the crucial first step. You must decide what the purpose for your yoga practice will be, as well as the type of clientele you would like to serve. It is important to narrow this target clientele as narrowly as you can to take the next steps to attract this group of people.

Record your goals for your studio as part of the visioning process. Write down specific key measurable results you aim to achieve through running your own business.

Determine the strategies you will have to use to financially sustain the studio. Hosting workshops, teaching yoga classes, having retail and online sales, private clients and teacher training programs are all potential income generating ideas.

Assessing Available Resources

At some point during the business planning process, the question of your available resources is certain to arise. Some practitioners decide to have investors get involved in financing their studio, while others refinance their own home to do so. Still others get part-time jobs to save the funds necessary to start a yoga operation, or seek small amounts of money from supportive friends and family members. Some people hold garage sales or do bake sales and other creative fundraising events.

It is helpful if owners can rent space in the location they wish to create a studio in, as this can save a lot of time and money. A place that used to serve as a yoga studio or fitness center is ideal, though it is also possible to use a space that was once an office or store. In the case of using a space that was not used before for yoga, it is important to take into consideration the tremendous potential costs of renovating the place to make it suitable as a studio.

Figure out how many classes, workshops or teacher trainings you will have to teach per year to cover your annual and start-up costs. Make sure you do not overestimate these figures, as they are very important in the planning and fundraising process.

Naming a Yoga Studio

Once you have written a thorough business plan and assessed that you have the necessary resources available to manifest your yoga studio vision, it is important to consider naming your studio. It is best to contact a trademark attorney at this point to see if your desired name is available. If you are unable to afford an attorney, you can see if anyone else is using the same name you have chosen by searching online.

Trademark Process

If you find that no one else is using the name you have selected for your yoga studio, you can visit the website for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Check if anyone has a pending application or federal registration for the name you plan to use.

After doing this, visit your state's trademark database to make sure that your desired name has not been taken by another yoga business, fitness or wellness center.

When going to file your business name online, be ready to pay approximately $335 to register your trademark. It is helpful to work with an attorney on this process to try your best to prevent receiving trademark application rejections.

Though opening a yoga practice is a challenging process that requires a lot of patience, persistence and commitment, many entrepreneurs will tell you that running a studio is well worth the effort it takes to create one.

Post office tips to help a home business

Starting a home-based business can be tough. Most entrepreneurs need all the help they can get. That's why it is so important to develop a network of resources throughout your local community. Places like the post office, library, and civic or social organizations can provide great opportunities to get the word out about your products or service.

What can a post office do to help you grow your business? Here are a few helpful tips:

1. The federal post office represents one of the oldest and most reliable forms of communication in our country's history. Billions of pieces of mail are processed each year, although this number has declined slightly recently due to the rise of electronic communication via the Internet. Still, the postmaster general does a brisk business through the numerous branch offices that are open in thousands of communities around the nation. Stop in to take a look at the signage listing the many ways in which you can mail letters or packages.

2. Ask about special services that might benefit your company. For example, depending on the type of business you operate, you may be eligible for non-profit postage for mail. In addition, you need to find out the difference in price and service between bulk rate and priority mail, as well as everything in between. Your company may need a less expensive postal rate than the one you have been using. Learn more about the options, especially for mass mailings and packages that may help to cut costs.

3. Find out about special services. There may be times when you will need to send a letter by certified or registered mail. Ask what these mean and whether they are recommended for the mailing you have in mind. Overnight and express options are more services to inquire about. You can also buy postage that supports or promotes an array of causes, such as the stamp for breast cancer research.

4. Shop for supplemental supplies. Some post offices offer stationery, toys, and other promotional items that feature postal designs. You also can sometimes purchase boxes, cartons, padded envelopes, masking tape, and related supplies for sending packages or special orders. Ask about the availability of such items and if they are not there yet, find out if some might be ordered or kept in stock for customers.

5. Request a post office box for your business. These come in different sizes and cost a relatively small amount each year. You can protect your personal home privacy if you are working from your house or property when you get a post office box. The key to your box will allow you to access mail at times when the post office service window is closed, as long as the building is still open.

There may be additional services you can take advantage of as well. Stop in to see what is available. Introduce yourself and explain your company's business. Perhaps the staff can offer some helpful solutions to your mailing problems or goals.

Home business Tips: Write a financial plan

A business plan is an important tool that will help you to focus your home based business, learn more about the competition and be realistic about the profits and expenses. Because many lenders are wary about home based businesses, a properly written plan will also help you to get a needed loan.

You will want to start with a cover page. This will have your business name, your name, address, phone number, email, and web page address. This page introduces you, so it should be exceptionally neat.

The next page is a table of contents, which will tell the page number of each of the important parts of your plan. You can include a small synopsis if you wish.

Start off with a description of the industry you are going to become a part of. Identify some of the competition, including as many as you can find that work from home. You will want to describe the basic procedures for this business and the average income of home workers. Explain how others have started and the areas they market to. This is to show a lender you know what you are getting into and to learn some things about the field yourself.

Next you will want to describe your business. What will be the exact responsibilities? How is it different from the businesses already in this field? Why is yours better? Include your pricing, your market area and any other relevant information. This area will allow you to focus your idea and think about ways you can make it better than the competition.

The next part of your business plan will discuss your goals. Write down all the goals you have for this business in one year and in five years. Make sure these are compatible with your lifestyle and family goals. Your goals should include production, profit, and amount of customers. Be realistic in the expected growth. Think about how you will handle your business if it grows faster than this. What about slower?

Now go into the details of your marketing plan. Will you use salesmen, flyers, direct mailers, TV ads, radio ads, newspaper ads, magazine ads, word of mouth, direct calling or the internet? Which ones will you rely on most? How much will you need to spend for each different type of advertising? Then you will need to discuss the results you have assumed. Do you expect five percent of the people to respond to your direct mailings, and two percent to buy your product? To come up with this number, you can try it on a test market, and interview others in similar businesses. Talk to your potential customers they may tell you of a specific niche you can fill, that will increase your profits. Learning the realistic numbers for expected respondents can be a little depressing, but it’s better to have an estimate now than count on responses that aren’t going to happen. Be creative in your advertising and you can lower your expenses a little. Maybe you will need to lower your rates in the beginning, maybe even doing some work for free just to get your name out there. Expect to put at least the first six months profits back into your business and at least half towards advertising.

The next section of your business plan is about action. This is where you describe specific things that you need to do within the next year to reach your goal. How many customers or projects do you need? According to your marketing plan what will you have to do to get that amount? Write down all the steps. How much of your time will be spent on each. If things go wrong or take longer then expected how will you overcome these minor set backs? With a step by step plan you will know what to do next, this will allow you to see the whole picture and keep your perspective through hard times.

Now you’ll need to discuss your expenses for the next year and for the next five years. Include everything your can think of, like, business license fees, logo and ad design fees, accountant, taxes, lawyers, employee wages, cost of materials, equipment, repairs, gas and driving expenses, copy rights, advertising and any other fees that go along with your specific business. Estimate a little high so that you will always have a little leeway. You can include a statement for the lender about how much you expect to save by operating this business at home rather then a rented office?

The next section will discuss how much money you’ll need to get started and how much to keep it going. Then tell the expected income followed by the gross profits. The final statement will be your net profits which if you are applying for a loan will be one of the most important parts. Now state the amount you have to invest in the business, what other sources your money is coming from and how much you need from a lending institution. Include in this section what you will do if you suddenly need a little more money. Will your business fail? (By the way, this is not an option). What is your back up plan. If you have one the lending institution will know you are prepared for nearly every situation. They should feel confident that their money is safe with you.

The last page should have your references, which can include previous employees, clients, lenders, your lawyer and your accountant. It can include positive statements these people have made showing what a wonderful business person you are.

Now you are armed with the tools you need to get a loan to start your business and the plan that will make it succeed.

Small business tips: how to accept debit cards

As an entrepreneur, selling your product or service is a major part of business. Once you have your target’s attention and they agree to buy, one must be able to offer a variety of payment options. Long gone are the days of cash and carry, and some people don’t own any credit cards. Personal checks come with security risks, and take longer to receive the funds. But most people have a checking account, thus they have a debit card linked to that account. A debit card is convenient, because it allows the consumer freedom from carrying cash. It also allows the consumer to make a purchase and have it immediately deducted from their account. So, how does one accept debit cards?

The primary step is to obtain a merchant account. A merchant account is an account that links your business checking account with a debit card processing company. The company processes the purchase from the debit card and transfers the money into the merchant’s business account. The company may charge a transaction fee that can range from 1.5 to 3 percent of the purchase, or a flat fee. Some merchant accounts also charge a monthly fee in addition to transaction fees. Merchant accounts are offered through banks as well as independent providers. Many entrepreneurs employ the merchant account services of their business bank.

Once one has a merchant account established, one will need a debit card terminal. This is the same type of terminal used for processing credit cards. There are two ways of accepting debit cards – online or off line debit card transactions. With offline transactions the merchant swipes the customer’s card through the terminal, just like a credit card, and the customer signs the receipt. For off line processing, the debit card must have a Visa or MasterCard logo on it.

Online transactions require the merchant to swipe the card through the terminal, and the customer must enter their personal identification number on a separate PIN pad. Online processing is more economical because the merchant is charged a flat fee per transaction. Offline processing leads to a percentage charge per transaction. Terminals and PIN pads may be bought or rented from the merchant account provider.

Terminals aren’t the only option for processing debit cards. There are wireless options such as an 800 number verification service. Your merchant account provider may have an 800 number available where one can call in a debit card purchase and receive instant authorization. Only offline processing is available for this option. This option is good for mobile entrepreneurs who have limited or no access to electrical outlets to plug in terminals.

Internet businesses provide for merchant customer transactions where the two never meet. There are merchant account providers who specialize in processing payments over the Internet. An entrepreneur would link his website shopping cart to the merchant account providers system, and the transactions are processed immediately. With Internet processing only offline processing is available.

Today’s consumer has high expectations and demands of the merchants they deal with. They expect a high quality product at a competitive price with fast delivery. They also expect to be accommodated; no matter what payment option they choose. Debit cards are increasingly becoming a primary choice when making purchases. Are you ready for your customers? If not, another merchant is.

Small Business Tips: Effective marketing plans

When writing effective business correspondence, one must pay great attention to even the minutest of details. However, one must also capture the readers’ attention and that can usually be best accomplished by projecting a specific writing style. Your chosen writing style could fit one of the following descriptive groups: elegance, class, opulence; humor, sincerity, friendliness; humorous, down-to-earth, friendly; blunt, stark, aggressive; to-the-point, professional, no frills; non-traditional, funky, offbeat; pleading, submissive, “hope-you-pick-me” or you could invent one entirely unique.

Obviously one or more styles could be combined, however this is difficult to do and still be straightforwardly effective. It is best to choose a specific style such as one of the above that suits the situation; the potential buyer; and your business as well as your own unique personality. A company that sells business services, for example, would find it inane to attempt to impress their prospective clientele base with a letter that was funky; prospective clients would most certainly shy away. To put it another way, can you imagine a vintage clothing store that would properly convey their image with a no frills, professional approach?

Once you have chosen the style that is suitable to the given situation, you must decide who is your target; who will be reading this information, or rather, who do you want to read it? It will usually be one of the following positional types that will be reading your copy:

1. The decision maker

2. The screener

3. The spouse of the decision maker

4. A partial decision maker

The decision maker is who you obviously want to receive your printed material; however, you must keep in mind that you may initially have to get it beyond the screener, the spouse (who may also act as a screener), or simply a partial decision maker. You want your information to ultimately end up in the hands of your target – the decision maker. Let’s discover how we can effectively attract and hold the attention of one of the intermediary persons involved yet still captivate the decision maker’s attention.

First, ask yourself this question as if you were each of the above recipients, “What is in this for me?” Good question, can you answer it? You must embed an attribute within your copy that is beneficial to each individual who has the good fortune to hold your materials in his/her hands. For the screener, it may be that it offers a lessening of the load of responsibilities from his/her shoulders by providing a viable option of transference to another entity – you. In this case, the screener will ensure the copy makes it to the decision maker and quite possibly will do so with his or her own personal recommendation!

For the spouse, the caveat will free up more time for the spouse (the decision maker) making it possible for the couple to spend quality time together, like more beneficial activities. A partial decision maker is easily pleased, as he/she will be most receptive to the same approach as the decision maker. Therefore, you must make your copy powerful enough so that it can gain impetus through the partial decision maker. In any of these scenarios, the point is to get whoever is the initial and intermediary contact in your corner, on your side, pitching your product or service, for their own gain. This is not as difficult as it sounds and can reap benefits that are well worth the time and effort it may take to put these concepts into practice.

To recap this effective strategy:

1. Define your style

2. Define the possible intermediary contacts

3. Define the benefits for the intermediary contacts

4. Define the benefits for the decision maker

5. Use these definitions to write copy that will capture attention

By implementing these principles you will find that your written copy will literally soar into your prospective buyers’ hands. Remember: Define, define, define, define…and put into action!

Business plan presentation tips

One of the most frustrating things in an office environment is trying to get management to take your ideas seriously.

While most companies SAY they listen to employees and consider them a valuable asset, when the chips are down, many of them do not truly give your input the time of day.

Many of us learn to shut down. We stop trying to bring up new ideas and schemes.

Yet most of us still come up with exciting ideas we're convinced are important for the company. And let's face it - if you can make your ideas stick, not only do you help make your employer more successful, but you become more important to the company leading to a reduced risk of being laid off, and a greater possibility of advancement.

On the other hand, it's human nature to resist change, and you'd be surprised how many people will try to kill your idea outright.

How can you get that idea across to management and have it taken seriously without antagonizing those around you?

Here are some tips:

1. Don't waste a lot of office time on it. If either coworkers or bosses think or suspect that you're putting a lot of office time into your zany new idea you're going to get shot down quickly. Emphasizing that a lot or all of the time preparing the proposal was done on your own time, that both lends credibility to the proposal and keeps the wolves at bay.

2. Align allies. In many cases, it makes sense to get someone else enthused about the idea first. This might be a respected coworker or someone in middle management. If it's coming from other people was well, management may take it more seriously. One warning - however trite it may sound, many other office workers will try to torpedo you due to jealousy or a perceived threat so be careful who you bring it up with (see below).

3. Know who it hurts. You already know who it helps. But who does it hurt? Those people who feel threatened by a proposal may torpedo it right out of the blocks. While working in a Spanish speaking office, I had suggested we take on this great new accounting package that would streamline operations a great deal and save money. The boss was excited and ready to buy. However, just to be sure he called in the main accountant. She immediately began to find tons of flaws in the software, and basically ripped it to shreds. Later I figured out that she actually liked the product, but was concerned that she wouldn't handle the English commands well. She was threatened by the idea and preferred the status quo. She'd never say that out loud to the boss, but that feeling caused her to torpedo it right away. Think through those people who may be hurt directly or indirectly by an idea and work to make it more palatable for them. If you start with enemies all around you, you're doomed.

4. Make sure to do you homework on costs and benefits. Your idea isn't brilliant just because it sounds great, it's brilliant because it's faster, cheaper, and more efficient than what's being done now. Try to back up concepts with hard facts. I once worked at a liquor company who was paying $20,000 a year to have their logo on a local soccer teams jersey. When I suggested skipping that and instead putting it on a scoreboard they were somewhat skeptical. When I mentioned that we could DONATE it to the city (with our logo on it of course) and that it would be the first electric scoreboard in the stadium, AND that it would cost only $8,000 and last for 10 years they sat up and took notice.

5. Anticipate objections. Think ahead on what people will say about it. Don't be blinded by your own brilliance. What are your weak points. When Jane Manager says, "Yeah, it looks good on paper, but in the real world that's not going to work," you can come back with, "I know that's how it sounds, but look, here are the numbers from Acme Company who tried something similar last year and it worked for them". Anticipate objections and come prepared to respond to them.

6. Don't try to be perfect. Don't get defensive. Nothing is more hokey that trying to say your idea is perfect. Don't try to poke holes in it, but an honest appraisal of some risks and downsides makes your presentation more solid. Phrases like, "now, I realize that this will cost more per year than we're currently paying, but it will give us an increased return due to it's efficiency and I think the return is worth the cost" sound solid and well thought out. It also covers you when costs are high - you DID mention that to start with.

7. Use management's own words. Don't be afraid to come right back at them. Listen to what they are talking about, and try to present ideas of your as solutions to problems they've raised, or as an outgrowth of something they've already done. "I was thinking about what you said at the staff meeting last week and I thought of a great solution…." Or "Remember how you said putting widget A into slot B might help our troubles? That got me thinking… what if we also put widget A into slot C…." You have to be a bit careful with this one, or management will take it as their own, and leave you in the cold which brings me to….

8. Take credit. Don't be obnoxious, but try to make sure that you keep clear where the idea came from. Many people will take an "underlings" idea and present it as their own. Preempt that by saying (in a staff meeting, or at a meeting with higher ups), things like, "when I brought this idea to Joe Boss on Friday, I was really excited by how he immediately helped me flesh out some of the details". You're giving him credit, but also clearly establishing where the initiative came from. You don't have to do it often. Usually two or three times, innocently said, is enough to catch in everyone's subconscious that you're the author of the deed…. Don't try to show anyone up though or you could engender resentment.

9. Cover your backside. Be careful that your ideas don't put you too far out on a limb. Make sure that others are coming with you so that if things don't turn out, it's clear that it was your idea, but it was everyone's decision to act on it.

10. No guts, no glory. Figure out your risk threshold. Sometimes it pays to go out on that limb. If you are in a position to do so, you've figured out how much of yourself is on the line, and you're willing to take the risk, sometimes walking the plank on your own brings the greatest glory.

How to Write a Business Letter

  1. Step 1
Begin in the upper left corner with the date you are writing the letter. The date can be used for a point of later reference.

  2. Step 2
State the name of the recipient, along with his or her job title, the name of the company and the address.

  3. Step 3
Include a salutation in the upper left corner. It is commonly "Dear," followed by the name of the recipient. It is a good idea to address the person formally as Mr. or Ms. If the name of the recipient is unknown, follow with Sir or Madam.

  4. Step 4
Continue with the body of the letter. Do not indent, but put a space between paragraphs. In a business letter, make sure the point is stated clearly. The purpose of the letter should be stated in the first sentence of the body.

  5. Step 5
Choose a proper closing. The most common one is "Sincerely" followed by a comma. Type your name below the body to the left. Below that, type your job title. Once the letter is printed, put the signature below the printed name.

  6. Step 6
Edit the letter. Check for spelling and grammatical errors very carefully. Nothing makes a letter look less professional than misspellings. Have another party ready the letter before sending it. The most popular word processing programs can also help you check. They do not catch all errors, however, so read the letter thoroughly.

  7. Step 7
Use company letterhead if possible. Make sure the letter is double spaced. Choose a block font that is easy to read, not a pretty or flowery font.

Retail business tips: how to design attractive shelving display

The only thing worse than walking into a store and not being able to find what you're looking for, is to walk into a store and find a complete mess.

Shelving is the most important factor in keeping your store neat and orderly. Not enough shelving space creates overcrowding and makes things difficult to find, while too much shelving can lead to wasted space.

It is very important to have the right amount of shelving space for the amount of product you have.

The type of shelves you use also create atmosphere for your store. Glass lends to an expensive, classy atmosphere, and wood to a homey atmosphere, while plastic or metal lends to a more economical or warehouse type atmosphere.

Picking a necklace out of a glass case is more appealing that picking one off a plastic rack.

You can create the feeling of high quality, expensive items at reasonable prices just by the way they are displayed.

The $20 necklace in a glass case seems a better buy to the customer than the same $20 necklace on the plastic rack which suddenly feels overpriced.

Shelving displays are a marketing tool and there are some factors to keep in mind before setting up your shelving units.

Marketing research shows the majority of people turn to the right when entering a store - use this to your advantage. Higher priced items can be placed to the right with lower priced items to the left. Or if you have an over abundance of an item you are trying to get rid of, set up a display on the right side of the store.

Marketing research also shows that people tend to look more at eye level than up above or down below. High top shelves and low bottom shelves can be used to neatly organize overstock. Keep your main product supply where the customer can easily see it.

There are some shelving no-no's I often see committed and can't believe places are still doing these.

1) Clothing should not be folded on tables or shelves - they should be hung up.

a) Folded clothes are dug through to find the right size (even if the sizes are marked on a sign).

b) Folded clothes do not get refolded the way they were originally folded, created a messy look.

c) Folded clothes don't get put back where they came from - this is especially true when the sizes are separated by shelves - the clothes usually get put back on the closest shelf - one it did not originally come from.

d) Folded clothes require more time to keep them neat and orderly due to refolding.

e) Folded clothes are reminiscent of garage sales; however in the store prices will be higher, making a customer feel they are not getting as good a deal.

2) Shelves should not be empty.

3) Shelves should not be over crowded.

4) Shelves should not be broken in any way - this is a safety hazard and you would be liable for any accidents or damages.

Shelves should be at equal heights, although they may be staggered to create a different look. Don't put shelves to close on top of one another to make removing and placing product difficult.

You can create pretty displays on your shelves by the way you arrange the product, be creative! Show how items can go together by putting them together. Use tissue paper, ribbon, confetti and other items to decorate the shelves giving them a more appealing look. This works incredibly well with glass shelves.

Use decorations in your shelving displays that go along with the seasons of the year, holidays or other events related to the area you live in. For example, at homecoming, use the school colors to decorate.

The most important rule to remember when creating shelf displays is to use your space wisely - don't leave too much empty space and don't overcrowd. Use your best judgment. What looks good to you will probably look appealing to others as well.

Small business tips: how to write an effective help wanted ad

In today’s economy, there is no question that it is an employers’ market. There are a lot of people out there looking for work, and many employers report that they are getting huge responses when advertising for new employees. The positive side of this situation is that employers have an excellent selection from which to choose. However, because so many people are looking either to change jobs or to find one after having been laid off, many people respond to job advertisements for position for which they are not qualified. Part of the reason for this is that employers are not specific enough when writing the copy for the advertisement. If the ad is not detailed enough, people who are not qualified for the position will apply. Sorting through these applications is time-consuming enough without having to separate those highly qualified individuals from those who are not even close. One way to avoid an overabundance of applicants is to write an effective help wanted ad that will address all the salient points and attract the kind of employee that will be an asset to your company.

Obviously, your goal in writing an effective help wanted ad is to attract the right person for the job that you have available. In order to do this, it is important not only to detail the job itself, but also to sell your company to perspective applicants. An advertisement is just that - a sales tool. This is especially important if you are looking for people who have very specific job skills and are in high demand. You want your ad to draw attention to your company and, once the applicant starts reading, give him or her reason to send a resume.

Any help wanted ad should start out first by listing the job title and a complete job description. If you are unclear as to how to write up the duties of the job, do an Internet search for “job descriptions,” and look for a position similar to that which you have available. Use that description as a foundation, and add in any pertinent details that are unique to your company. Make the description as clear as possible. If you are replacing someone who is leaving voluntarily, ask that person to read over your job description and add in anything that he or she feels is pertinent.

Next, outline the qualifications that you require. This should also be very specific and detail minimum educational level, years of experience in the field, any certifications or licenses that are required, necessary computer skills, and any other qualification that you have determined to be necessary for the person who will ultimately do this job. Indicate special requirements such as the need to travel. This is all critical information and, although some people do ignore stated qualifications and apply for jobs in the hopes that an employer will waive these requirements, normally, only people who fit the description will apply.

List all benefits including number of vacation days, insurances, flex hours, dress code, cafeteria plans, retirement plans, educational reimbursement, etc. Try to be as complete in this area as possible since this is the section in which you are really selling your company to potential employees.

Describe your company history – length of time in business, number of employees, branch locations, nature of the business, etc. This is very helpful to job seekers who may have preferences as to sizes of companies, and opportunity for advancement. Again, you are selling yourself here, so write this in an inviting fashion! You might also consider listing nearby attractions of interest such as universities, shopping facilities, etc, especially if you are trying to attract out of town applicants who may not be familiar with your city or town. There are situations where you may wish to place a “blind” ad – that is, advertise without indicating your company name or even your location. This is important if you are replacing someone who does not yet know that his or her job is in jeopardy. In this case, you should still describe your company as completely as possible while at the same time veiling location and other information that might alert the person that you are trying to replace.

Finally, make it easy for people to apply for your position. It’s the 21st century, after all, and most people are looking for jobs online. People want to be able to apply online as well. Therefore, your advertisement should list an email address for resume submissions as well as a standard post office address. If you haven’t done so already, set up a separate email address to use solely for job applicants. The traditional “cover letter” has been replaced by a “cover email,” but you should still require this accompanying information be sent along with a resume. Request that people send their resumes as an email attachment. This makes it easy for them to send and convenient for you to access and print.

Following this plan will ensure you of effective advertising and draw in the right candidates for your open position. Applicants will know what is expected of them and, in turn, you will not be forced to sift through a pile of resumes from people who are completely unqualified for the job opening. Tips for a successful business luncheon

You enter a nice restaurant and see those impeccably groomed, suit types having a business luncheon. Ever wondered if you had the confidence, panache and table manners to wheel and deal over a meal? Here are some hot tips served up to help you clinch the deal.

CHOOSE THE RESTAURANT WISELY It is always advisable to take your guest to a restaurant you have personal knowlege of, preferably close to work. This guarantees good service and regular patrons are accorded the best tables. Familiarity with the maitre'd and staff will surely impress.

MAKE RESERVATIONS Inform the maitre'd of the business luncheon ahead of time. State preferences - a table with a view, a nice quiet corner. Beats battling harried waiters by the kitchen area.

NAPKIN NO-NO'S Place the napkin on your lap once seated. If you need to get up, leave the napkin on your seat. Do not tuck in your napkin - you're not at a kid's party. Don't fidget with the napkin or cutlery - sure signs of nervousness.

TIME YOUR PITCH PERFECTLY The ideal time to have that crucial discussion is immediately after ordering the food. Do not wait till the food arrives. Talking with your mouth full and periodically spraying your guest is not attractive. Pitching after a meal is not advised as you will not get the guest's full attention once his stomach is full.

ORDER YOUR DISHES WITH CARE Pasta, soup and unshelled seafood tastes great but not at a business meal. Having bits of sauce decorating your tie does not project professionalism. Alcohol consumption should be kept to a minimum as your potential client does not want to enter into business with one slurring or passing out during lunch.

KEEP THE PROPS MINIMAL The table should be clutter free. Restaurant tables are small to begin with. Only basic materials for the business pitch are necessary. Turn the cell phone off - contrary to popular belief you can survive an hour without it. Nothing is worse than politely looking on as your host has a conversation with the wife about dinner plans.

PAYMENT Credit cards are the way to go. Stylish, impressive and you are spared the ordeal of counting bills in front of your guest. Tip generously and compliment the staff. This augurs well for future visits.

END THE MEAL Once you've had desert and coffee, end the meeting. Do not browbeat your guest into making immediate decisions. Make it seem like you have another pressing engagement.Looking busy always helps. Shake hands and take your leave.

If all goes well you should be getting that contract within the week. Congratulations!

Business: tips for successful speechwriting

Whether it's in the boardroom or the classroom, being able to write a good speech is always an asset. Often, the difference between success and failure (or at least acceptance or rejection) is the skillful use and application of words.

Good speechwriters aren't born, they're made. It's often a trial-and-error process, made up of learning what works and what doesn't with different audiences by trying things out and watching them bomb horribly. Occasionally there will be people who seem to have an inborn talent for always knowing the right thing to say and when to say it, but if you're not one of those people, don't worry. You're right on par with most of the rest of us.

When writing a speech, the first thing that you have to do is research your topic. This is usually an exhaustive process, involving pouring over much more information than you'll actually use in the speech. It's vital that you have a wide understanding of the topic, however, since the more you know about it the more you can compress into a 2-minute speech. Compile your information, set it aside for a day or two, and then read over it again... find any points that you don't think are adequately covered in your research, and then hone in on those few points. Repeat this process until you think you've got the entire subject covered extensively.

Next, you need to decide exactly what part of all of this information you're going to actually use. Unless you're writing this speech to be used for an industry-specific function, avoid as much of the jargon and technical terms as possible. Try to summarize what you can into layman's terms, and if jargon must be included make a quick sidenote defining it. You'll find that removing the technical explanations of how and why things happen works wonders, since many listeners aren't as concerned with the how and why as they are with the result of what happens.

Make sure that whatever your specific topic is gets covered in detail, without too much detail. Again, unless the purpose of the speech is very technical or being presented to a very technical group, you're not there to analyze every piece of information. Instead, you're trying to present as much of it as you can without losing your listeners.

Finally, make sure to use language that flows well. If you were simply writing an article about a subject, it would be more permissible to use phrases or words that might not flow well in spoken language, but in speechwriting it's essential to avoid them. Whether or not you're the one who will actually be presenting the speech, you need to remember that someone will have to be able to read what you write. Your goal is to make it as pleasant as possible to pronounce for the speaker, and as easy as possible to hear for the listeners. A poorly put-together speech can be an ordeal for everyone involved.

In the end, be sure to treat both readers and listeners of your speech with respect. Put as much information as possible into your work, but make it as easy and entertaining to listen to as possible; after all, that's what separates the good speechwriters from the great ones.

Great Work From Home Business Tips

Are you interested in working from home? If so then you should definitely check out these work from home tips. Working from home is very desirable, but it is not as easy as it sounds. That is because when you are at home you are in "home mode" and not "work mode". These distinctions are important to make because if you do not make them and figure out a way to create a "work mode" while at home you will not get much accomplished. The following work from home tips will help you create a work from home atmosphere that will work for you.

Tip #1. Work Hours

Everyone likes the idea of working from home because they can make their own hours. However, if you do not have set work hours on certain days then you will find that it is not as easy to accomplish work from home like you imagined. As a result, decide on some work hours each day and then stick to them. If you need to change them for any reason that is okay, just reschedule those work hours at another time. This may seem silly at first, but you have to control your schedule in order to complete your work.

Tip #2. Work Space

In order to successfully work from home you will need a set workspace. The reason this is important is that you need to know where your workspace is and that when you are in that area you are in work mode. In addition, if you use your entire house your office then you will misplace things and make working from home more difficult on yourself. You may not have space for an office so to speak but you can make a place where you only work from home.

Tip #3. Turn off the TV

When you are at home, you may always have the TV turned on. This is normal because people like to keep up with what is going on in the world as well as their favorite shows. However, the problem is that if you have the TV on you will not be able to accomplish as much work. That is because you will be distracted, constantly looking up for a few minutes here and there, and your work will suffer. If you really want to take advantage of the opportunity to work from home and make the most of your time then turn off the TV. You will get more work done and then can sit down and watch an entire show without feeling guilty about it!

There are of course many other work from home tips you can implement to help you accomplish more and make the most out of working at home. However, the three mentioned here are a really good start and if you implement these you will see immediate results. You can work from home, but you must be disciplined and focused or you will not get very far!

We all know that unique content is a very valuable asset on the internet so another form of payment that you could offer is to write an article or two exclusively for the webmaster with his chosen theme and keywords in exchange for helping you out. Tips to set up your Internet Home Based Business

Setting up an Internet home based business is like starting an actual business. Some people may think that since a business is operated online and from home, it is a smaller-scale venture compared to real businesses. This, however, is a misconception. Some Internet home based business are even bigger and are experiencing more growth than real ones. Starting and operating an online business venture may be a bit challenging when you are new to the field and is used to the conventional business and marketing world. However, there are also many resources on the Internet that you can get your hands on in the actual setting. The difference lies on how you take advantage of these unique Internet resources and make them work for you. Here are some tips on how you can successfully set up your Internet home based business.

PLAN AND SET GOALS
As in any business venture, the key to a successful Internet home based business is to plan. Set goals; determine what you want your business to achieve, and prepare concrete action plans on how you will achieve your business goals. Plan what you are going to need, in terms of investment and tools. In terms of investment, you might need to upgrade your computer for a better one, or you might need to purchase another computer to sustain your business operations. The investment requirements will differ based on the nature of your Internet home based business. In terms of tools, since there are a lot of resources available to you on the Internet, plan which resources can help your business. Do you need to set up a blog site, or join forums to advertise your site? If so, in what way should you advertise? These are just some of the things you should already lay out in detail before you even get started.

PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE
Once your Internet home based business is under way, the next thing you need to do is to advertise! There are plenty of ways to advertise on the Internet. You can set up a blog and write articles about your products. You can join forums and post website ads in various sites that your target customers often visit. You can exchange links with other sites to drive traffic to yours. You can post pictures and videos of your products on your site, your blog, and in forums. Also, master the art of search engine optimization to lure people to your website, and thus, to your product. The more visitors you get, the more potential customers you have!

BUILD A CUSTOMER BASE
Just as any actual business will not succeed without a loyal customer base, you also have to build a customer base for your Internet home based business. It is important to build a relationship with those who transact business from you. Chances are that they can even bring in more customers because of their contacts.
