Career Survival Tips: Taking Care of Mind, Body and Soul While in Career Transition

Sometimes we're so busy taking care of business, that we forget to take care of ourselves. Yet, if you're amidst a major career change, there is nothing more important than listening to your Inner Voice and tending to all the little things your body, mind and soul is asking for and needs. Here are some great ways to nourish your whole self and stay balanced while successfully navigating through your career change.

1. Keep a career journal.

Career coaches like myself frequently recommend journaling as a way to manage your career transition while keeping a healthy perspective. Devote at least one night per week to writing down your thoughts about your transition, recording milestones in the process, and letting go of emotions by putting pen to paper. Write whenever you feel inspired - even if it's every night. Your journaling tool could be a plain notebook, diary, scrapbook of writing entries and mementos, or even an online blog where you invite others in a similar situation to ponder your musings and offer their opinions or share stories. Every so often, go back and read your previous journal entries to remind yourself of where you're going and where you've been, in terms of the career you envision for yourself. You will most likely be pleasantly surprised at the progress you've made!

2. Set boundaries.

Life can get a little crazy when change is happening all around us. If you've still got one foot in your former professional role and the other foot has stepped into the future, you may feel unsure of whether you're coming or going! This is natural, especially in times of transition. The trick is to set boundaries for yourself as a way to curb the feelings of overwhelm. One boundary could be, turning off some of the channels of information overflow. For example, if you've signed up for new career membership associations or email newsletters, you could create a special email address for this purpose alone. This way, personal pursuits can be kept separate from your daily responsibilities, helping you to feel less distracted and stressed. Time can be another boundary that keeps anxiety at bay. For instance, you can make a commitment to not to think about anything career-related after 8 p.m., instead reserving another time slot for this purpose. Your commitment could be, "I will work on my career transition from 5:30-7:30 at least twice a week." By setting and maintaining boundaries between your career goals, everyday responsibilities, and leisure pursuits, you will feel more in-control of your life, balanced and at peace with yourself and the process.

3. Exercise your body while you expand your mind.

So many of us spend the majority of our days sitting in front of a computer, both at our jobs and at home. It's no wonder that insomnia and being overweight has become a problem for millions of Americans. As always, but especially at a time of career change when stress levels are higher, regular exercise is vital to your well-being. Make it a priority to engage in some kind of aerobic exercise at least 3 times a week and use hand weights to tone muscles and keep blood flowing. Pilates, Tae-Bo and yoga are all excellent ways to reduce tension, properly align the body and keep energy flow on an even keel. No matter which type of exercise you choose, you can use this time to "work on" the more pressing issues in your career and the changes you are making. Think about it, how many times have you sat in front of the television, not hearing or seeing a thing because you're consumed with what's happening in your life? Taking time out to reduce your stress level by exercising... while focusing on your goals, stumbling blocks or major decisions, will ease your body and mind and help you feel good both mentally and physically. Some of my best ideas have come to be when I’m out exercising and thinking out of the box.

4. Get support.

Sometimes when we share our vision of the future with friends, family and coworkers, we are met with resistance, hit with frightening and discouraging "rumors" about the career marketing or industry of our choosing, and can feel like the wind was just knocked out of us. This is not a healthy way to feel when trying to break out of established ruts and make a motion for improvement in our careers. For this reason, if you're serious about finding a new job that has you springing out of bed each morning, you'll want to invest in a career coach. Many people who decide to make a bold move in their career, start up their own business or return to school to learn a new skill or trade, do so with the help of a career coach or counselor. You will find that a career counselor can give much needed practical advice and guidance, while offering an objective viewpoint on your personal situation. For more information about coaching and to explore my own career coaching tools, tips and services, visit the URL listed at the bottom of this article. I’m here to help.

5. Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative.

As mentioned above, when you're doing something big and out of the ordinary like changing your career, sometimes it seems there are naysayers at every turn, thwarting your efforts and tossing a wet blanket over your plans. This is exactly what you want to avoid if you're serious about leaving your old job behind and starting fresh doing something you love. Yes, you CAN do it, and yes there is money to be made in almost any profession. It takes time and effort to get there, but trust me when I say that millions have manifested their own career destiny, and you can too. The idea is to keep the Negative Nellies and other defeating influences at bay. If there are certain people who seem to react unfavorably when you discuss your plans and dreams, stop sharing with those people. Instead, focus on friends and colleagues who lift your spirits and help further your cause - these are the ones who will help you get where you want to be, faster and with the least amount of effort. Other negative forces are bad habits, addictive and destructive behaviors. You're on a plan for self-improvement right now anyway, so make it a goal to quit any harmful habits you may currently engage in like smoking, excessive drinking, binge eating, unhappy relationships, or other activities that distract you from achieving happiness.

There are so many things you can do to keep your mind, body and spirit functioning at peak performance during this exciting time of change. Remember that, even though your current focus is on your career, deciding what you want to be when you grow up, and how to best navigate the transition, you are still a human being who deserves a balanced life of learning, new experiences, solitary time, activity and spiritual growth. Remember to give yourself these gifts and you will feel whole, at peace, and ready for whatever comes your way.

Tips for Searching for Hospital Jobs Online

In this day and time, the internet is a one stop shopping and information destination. Just about anything can be found on the internet. For this reason, many businesses are choosing to post job openings online because they know that more people are searching for jobs online rather than the old traditional ways of calling or looking in the newspaper. Searching for hospital jobs online is no exception. Hospitals and medical centers across the country and around the world are now posting hospital jobs online.

If you are searching for hospital jobs online, the first thing that you need to realize is that there are literally hundreds of thousands of jobs listed on the internet. Therefore, the best way to search for hospital jobs online is to narrow your search. For example, searching for hospital jobs online by location or job position will significantly decrease the number of websites that you have to sort through. One of the best ways to search hospital jobs online is to search by hospital or medical center. Most hospitals will post job openings on their website, so you can go directly to the source for job information.

One thing to keep in mind is that many hospitals will post jobs internally before they open them to the public. So, if you have a contact, friend or family member at a particular hospital, have them search for hospital jobs online via their intranet. This way, you will know about a job opening before the general public knows and can go ahead and submit and application or resume to the appropriate person. If nobody from the hospital applies, you will likely be the next runner up. In addition to searching for hospital jobs online, we also suggest that you contact hospitals of interest to see if you can submit a resume to the departments where you would like to work (such as nursing, maintenance, etc.) so that they will have your information on hand should a job opening occur.

7 Top Tips for Using Job Search Websites

Finding a job online is not longer a luxury or something reserved for only a few lucky people who know how to find job opportunities on the Internet. Today, anyone can get quick access to a large variety of job listings on major job search websites such as Superjoblist.com or Monster.com. Such websites allow you to post resumes and apply to a job through online forms. Newsletters and email announcements that let you know of new jobs in the areas you are interested in are also available and should be used extensively to get the edge on new listings. In addition to the actual job listings, you may also find resources on how to secure a job and how to make your CV more attractive. Here are a few general tips that apply to all major job search websites – assimilate these ideas in your job hunt strategy and your chances of success will skyrocket.

1. Use online and offline social networking to get more resources on new jobs and to get recommendations.

2. Don’t rely on a single job hunting website and try to diversify your search. There are literally thousands of niche job sites that might give you a better chance than a huge general job searching website.

3. Job search engine websites are also an interesting option – they work similarly to Google or Yahoo, but they only display results closely related to job offers.

4. Local websites should also be included on your list, together with national job listing websites.

5. In addition to creating profiles on job websites, also check with your Chamber of Commerce and local newspaper listings.

6. Job banks are another resource that can land you your dream job. Search by keyword, location, career type or any other relevant criteria and narrow down the list to only the most relevant available jobs.

7. When applying for a job, you should try to personalize the message as much as possible, and show the employer that you actually took the time to read through their ad and to go through their company profile. A simple copy-paste cover letter won’t do much good, especially if it is very vague and general.

Finding your dream job is not as difficult as you might think. However, remember that you are not the only one hunting for a good job, so expect some tough competition. Success won’t necessarily happen after one or two job applications, but perseverance and a good baggage of skills will definitely put you on the right track.

Internet Business Tip: Keep an Idea Journal

"We have 50,000 ideas run through our minds daily. Ideas are like wet slippery fish. You got to get 'em when they show up or they will slip away never to be seen again." - Earl Nightingale

One of your best business tools will be the journal you keep. Ideas come at us all the time and from everywhere. Where are you going to keep them?

I keep my journal with me in my purse. If I have so much as a moment waiting for someone my journal is out and I am writing or reviewing what I have written in the past. Any idea that floats through my mind I stop to record. If I listen to an inspiring or educational tape my journal is out taking notes.

Keep everything in that journal:

* Lecture notes go there

* Goals go there

* Lists of the people I would someday like to meet go there

* Speculating on the success of my business

* Marketing ideas go there

* Quotes and sayings (Like the Nightingale quote I used to start this mail)

I write it all in my Idea Journal. Why? So I know where to go when I am ready to sit down and write, plan and dream. If I have a glimmer of an insight I capture it for later use.

Part of the pleasure of a journal is choosing one that you love. I personally love Moleskeine Journals. I like my pages to be unlined as I prefer to be unconstrained. How about you? Do you have a favorite color? Do you like lined pages or unlined pages? What size will work best? Maybe you like pictures on yours... Go to the bookstore and find a great journal.

Once you have one, take it with you everywhere. You never know when inspiration strikes. And if someone you are talking to says something profound, whip out your journal and take notes. In fact, I often just bring it out and keep it next to me when I am having lunch with a friend. I never know when I want to refer to a fact or record a new idea.

One of the things that will happen internally is that your subconscious will begin to recognize that you are listening. And you will find more and more of your thoughts and insights coming to the surface to be recorded. By consistently recording all those stray thoughts and great ideas you will find that you have supercharged your access to your own creativity!

Free and Easy Advertising Techniques to Build Your Internet Business

If you are just starting your Internet business, you need to keep expenses down to a minimum. Yet, you must still attract people to visit your website. Without traffic, you have no business. Fortunately, there are many free or low cost ways to attract visitors to your website. Following are several free and easy techniques to build traffic and increase sales.

1. Internet Forums

Internet forums are websites that focus on the exchange of information. Some people are asking questions and some provide answers. Others just want to vent or discuss topics that are related to their niche. Most forums are targeted to one particular area. An advantage of using forums is the fact that almost all of the people on the site are interested in the same topic so you have a targeted audience. Register with as many forums in your niche as possible and post information every day. Develop a signature (sig) file that reads like a small two or three line classified ad promoting your site or product. Add your sig file to each posting that you make on every forum. You will be quite surprised at the amount of traffic that you can generate using forums.

2. Traffic Exchanges

A traffic exchange is a system where members enter the URL of their website. Members must browse among a number of other members’ sites in order to receive credits. After you have earned a certain number of credits, other members will view your site (and thus see your ads). This increases the number of visitors to all the sites involved in the traffic exchange. Some are free and some may charge a monthly fee. A nice feature of this method is that it will create a large amount of traffic in a short amount of time. However, you should note that this traffic is not targeted and may be less responsive than targeted advertising methods. It also requires you to commit a fair amount of time viewing other sites.

3. Free Classified Ads

There are many free classified ads available on the Internet. Some of them work better than others and much depends on your skill in writing ads. If you can write effective ads, this may be an extremely effective method to advertise you new Internet business. If you are using free classified ads, place a tracking code along with your URL as you place each ad to determine which ones are working for you and which ones are ineffective. The advantage of this method is that it requires an investment of you time just once and can then run on autopilot for quite a long time.

4. Article Marketing

This is one of my favorite methods of advertising. Write articles and publish them in the largest article submission sites. By doing this on a regular basis, your articles become viral and can be viewed by thousands of people. Make sure to add a resource box that file that reads like a small two or three line classified ad promoting your site or product. The only drawback to this method is that you must submit at least one article each day to achieve significant benefits. As you consider which of these strategies is best for you, think about the time you have to commit versus the potential benefits. By using two or more of these techniques, you can establish a good foundation for your Internet business.

10 Tips on How to Make a Successful Internet Business Selling

You want to make money by selling with an internet business? That's wonderful! You've carefully thought this out, and decided that you want to sell things on the internet to make money. Well fortunately for you, I'm here to give you some tips (ten of them to be exact) so you can get started on the path to success.

In no particular order...

1) This may seem quite obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people forget this: have a clear goal in mind for your business, and work toward that goal so it becomes a reality.

2) Have a plan of action before starting your internet business.

3) Think about how much time you are able to commit to your business, and balance that out with everything else in your life.

4) Research what is 'hot', and what is 'not'. Then you can choose what to sell. Also when choosing what to sell, take into account your own expertise and knowledge about that kind of product.

5) Plan on your advertising budget and how much you can afford without going overboard. Do you have a budget for paid advertising or are you going to rely on free advertising?

6) Know your target market like the back of your hand, and focus all your efforts on them and them alone.

7) Think about how you plan on getting the product to the customer. Will you use a dropshipper, or will you store your own inventory and package and send it yourself?

8) Have you considered alternatives to your standard online shop? You have options such as affiliate marketing, where you sell other people's products for a commission, or creating your own product and marketing it yourself. Keep these in mind.

9) Look for a legitimate, reputable wholesaler when buying your inventory. Don't get suckered into fake wholesalers and the like.

10) Do at least something for your business every day, even if it's as simple as writing an article or posting in a forum about your business.

While these tips will definitely help you out to make a successful internet business selling, I can't tell you everything there is to know. The only one that can make your successful internet business is yourself.

Two SEO Tips to Help Your Online Business Prevail Over Your Competition

One of the best ways to make money is through the use of the internet. It is not as easy as it sounds but it can be if you know what you are doing. The internet has grown so much in the past couple of years that it has become such a huge information source that very rarely will you not find what you are looking for. The internet also makes it easier for people to do their shopping for the holidays. And it also can help us find things we need to know in everyday life. The internet is also a great place to start a business and become very wealthy. You just have to hit the right markets and know how to run a business online using Google as a search engine.

Google has been the leader in all of the search engines and has been the role model for any other search engine to compare to. The reason is because some how they found a way to weed out all the garbage information and place the quality information to show first when someone does a search for certain keywords. Although you can never keep track of Google and their algorhythms there are ways to help your site look great for Google and your customers. You can improve your rankings on Google by making your website both an information site about your items you are selling and also a place that only sells the product you are offering. The main thing here is to make your website rise above all the other competition. You will have to do this in the eyes of Google and in your customers’ eyes as well. It may take some time to find out which Florida SEO companies are right for you and which are in your price range.

One of the best SEO services that you can have is the art of onsite optimization. Some people have some knowledge of how this works but most people do not. This is a very touchy task because it involves the back end of the website. You first will want to do some keyword research and find the keywords that are going to bring you the most traffic and at the same time not impossible to rank for. Once you have the keywords you will then need to place some title tags on each page of the website. Use heavy keywords that are real popular in the title tags. This is one of the most important tool you can use to get you website SEO ready. Next you will need to add the keywords in the Meta tag details for each page. Once that is done you will then need to add a meta tag "description" of each page. Use a brief 2 sentence description using some keywords as well. These three steps will help your site get found by Google.

Once you make your site looking great and easy for Google to find then you can start the second phase of the SEO services and that will be the offsite optimization. Although it may take some time for your website to start seeing results don’t get discouraged. The results will happen as long as you follow the rules and be ethical and don’t try to cheat the system.

8 Cheap Marketing Tactics For Your Business

The majority of small business owners rely on only 2-3 marketing strategies for pulling potential customers within their grasp. However, the fact is that "Caffeine Marketing" is about encompassing all possible marketing resources available and gaining a profit from it. Here are a few tactics for gaining more customers and referrals:

1) Referrals: The key to productive referral business is a proactive approach. You cannot sit back with a good image and expect that business will be driven in. Never assume that you current clients or customers will refer you. Ask them for a referral. Send out business gifts and thank you cards to current clients to help smack your companies name back in their mind. People will usually not accept something for free. Especially when they are satisfied customers they are 10x more likely to refer you for being so generous.

2) Writing: Industry experts are highly recognized and praised. Article writing and submitting those articles to the masses will help you get recognized in your industry, amongst your competitors as a threat, and increase awareness. The internet is filled with e-zines looking for material to send out to their paid subscribers and customers. I write at least 1-2 articles PER DAY and then take the next day to submit the articles I write to a list of e-zines that I am registered with. This marketing strategy alone has generated $5000 this month for my web design business. I know its challenging to think of something to write about. The easiest thing is to write about the business you're in. Share your expertise.

3) Newsletters: Some newsletters are nothing more than advertising so be sure to write about something that your subscribers care about. 90% of your newsletter should be about something important to the subscriber and only 10% should be your selling point. Sure, the 90% content rich portion can help lead to that close but never be over boisterious.

4) Cold Calling: I remember when I spent 3 months as a telemarketer raising funds for the Republican National Committee. That was the worst and scariest experience of my life. However, there are many people who actually love just opening up the White Pages and randomly calling people. A good way to turn cold calling into hot warm "Caffeine marketing" style calling is to define your businesses target market and categorize the people you plan on calling. Birds of a feather flock together and calling the right potential customers will dramatically increase your success.

5) Free Information: Give away as much possible information you can without giving the complete answer. Offer a newsletter or blog of information that links to your web site or has your businesses phone number.

6) Guarantee Your Business: Nothing is more promising than a guarantee. People associate their business ties with trust that has been built over the years and over experiences. Trying to get a potential customer to switch to your services or products can be tough. A guarantee can often sway them. Use your guarantee like you use your logo and tag line... everywhere.

7) Networking: People often join their local Chamber of Commerce in hopes of building good relationships with potential customers or clients. They end up bouncing from person to person like a human business card machine. "Thank you, come again" says Apu. No one will call you if you behave like this. You must cultivate and build a relationship through a meaningful connection when networking. Playing the lottery (handing out 100 business cards in hopes of one callback) does not work for most. One way I help detour this when having only a few seconds to chat (an elevator pitch for example) is to put a guarantee on my business card and a 10% off discount with the card.

Six Secrets Of Successful Networking

By: Victoria K. Munro

Networking is an art as well as a highly effective tool to grow most any business. Anyone can become an effective networker and enjoy the process, provided they're willing to invest a little time and energy. Just showing up and hoping for the best won't result in success. Apply the Six Secrets below and make networking work for you and your business.

Secret #1: Keep an Upbeat Attitude

Attitude is critical. Failure to maintain a positive, enthusiastic attitude towards networking is guaranteed to diminish your success. Put yourself in a good frame of mind by remembering that you can learn and benefit from everyone you meet.

Focus on what you'll gain. For example, you can:
̢ۢ Get to know potential power partners and people who might be able to help your clients or who might eventually become clients themselves.
̢ۢ Learn from other people's experiences as you listen to them.
̢ۢ Make new friends.

Secret #2: Go with a Game Plan

Wear something unique that stands out and makes it easier for others to ask you questions and start a conversation. Pins, custom nametags or embroidered logos can also pique someone's curiosity and beg a question.

Create meaningful conversational starters. Instead of asking, "What do you do?" when you meet new people, you could ask:
̢ۢ What do you enjoy most about networking?
̢ۢ What do you find most rewarding (or challenging) about being a business owner?
̢ۢ What are you passionate about?

Secret #3: Craft a Dynamic 30-Second Commercial
At most networking functions, you will be repeatedly asked what you do. Respond with a commercial that is:
̢ۢ Emotionally engaging
̢ۢ Memorable
̢ۢ Succinct -- don't ramble
̢ۢ Sincere and caring -- expressing genuine passion for what you do
̢ۢ Intriguing -- causing people to ask more questions

Use strong visual language -- word pictures they'll remember. This will make it easier for them to refer you when they meet someone who needs your products or services. A friend who operates a pest control company gave the same short message at his leads group each week. "If it moves and you don't want it to, call me!" No one ever forgot what he did. A children's portrait photographer encourages potential clients to buy the gift that she guarantees mom-in-law will never return. Always focus on the benefits you offer.

Secret #4: Get a Great Business Card
Always carry an adequate supply of business cards, and make sure that your card truly reflects who you are and what you do. This may be the only representation of you and your company you'll leave with someone. Hire an expert to create a card that clearly, attractively and accurately portrays who you are and what you offer. A creative tag line can help explain even a complex concept and make it memorable.

Secret #5: Don't Focus on the Food

Plan to eat before arriving at an event. If that isn't possible, take care of your hunger first, then start networking. Don't try to mix the two. It's impossible to give someone your full attention while balancing a plate and glass and digging in a purse or pocket for a business card.

Secret #6: Make a Fabulous First Impression
There are no second chances at making a fabulous first impression! Business is built on relationships, and you're there to start building new relationships, not to sell your products or services. A key to making a good first impression is ensuring that the other person feels important, allowing him or her to bask in the spotlight.

Apply the secrets above and develop the fine art of networking to grow your business.

Networking To Find A Job

By: David J Clemen

The best and most common way to find out about open positions is through networking. Networking is all about talking to people. As you talk to people your network begins to grow. Once you have built that network it will grow and grow as you communicate with more people. That network will be a valuable resource to gain advice, information and other support to help you be successful professionally.

Networking is not just about calling everyone you know both personally and professionally and asking if they know of any open job positions. An effective networker will take a much different approach.

First they will start by listing as many names of contacts they have that they can possibly think of. This list can consist of both personal and professional contacts. The very next step is to put together some type of presentation. It is important to remember at this stage it is not about just calling up and asking if they know of anyone hiring. The initial goal is to be seeking career and industry advice. The reason you are doing this is because you will not come off as a desperate job seeker but someone doing research. If you just ask about open positions they will quickly say “no” and that will be the end of it. What you want to do is build an active network that will be keeping you in mind when something does cross their path. Here is a better way to approach it a good suggestion for your networking presentation.

“Hi Bob, Jim Jones at ABC Company suggested that I give you a call. Jim and I have worked together over the years and he mentioned you work in the software industry and are the VP of Product Development. I am a programmer and feel you could probably give me some valuable career advice. I would really appreciate some of your time. Would you be available for a cup of coffee next week?”

You did not ask for a job but advice. There is a big difference. People are always willing to help someone that has made them feel good about themselves and who appears to be genuinely appreciative of their time. This approach can be utilized in many ways. You can ask for job hunting advice (resume, cover letter, etc...), industry advice, contacts, industry information and much more. As these people are giving you advice they are learning more and more about your experience and qualifications. Making them a very effective tool for you to identify open positions.

By having these conversations you now have people that are familiar with you keeping you in mind for positions. Also always remember to send a thank you letter to these people. It will go a very long way.

Teen Business Do's and Don'ts

by Randall S. Hansen, Ph.D.

This article is all about providing great tips and suggestions to help younger teens earn some money and get work experience by starting their own neighborhood businesses.

  • Do get the advice of an adult family member before starting your business.
  • Don't try to compete directly with any big businesses; the key to finding success with your business is to find a niche -- find something that is lacking and fill it.
  • Do consider coming up with a cool name for your business -- it will make you seem more professional.
  • Don't get too discouraged if your business starts slowly; it takes time to get your business known.
  • Do make detailed plans about how you will run your business, including the types of services you will perform (babysitting, lawn care, errands, tutoring, etc.), prices, cancellation notices, payment options, and the like. And do consider writing a mission statement or philosophy to help guide your actions.
  • Don't let any of your customers cheat you out of your money. And do consider enlisting an adult family member to help you handle any customer disagreements.
  • Do consider developing agreements for each customer to sign. In fact, do get everything you do or plan to do in writing.
  • Don't let a competing teen stop you from opening a similar business. If you don't want to compete, do consider forming a partnership. With multiple partners, you'll have a bigger network of potential customers and perhaps more time flexibility because you'll be sharing the load. But do be aware that having partners can also add lots more hassles and aggravations.
  • Do use every available resource to spread the word about your new business, including posting flyers around the neighborhood, in community centers and religious organizations, and local stores. But remember that the best source will be the network of your family, friends, and neighbors -- and current customers, once you get your business established. You can consider going door-to-door to announce your service, but don't do it by yourself -- have an adult go with you.
  • Don't let a dissatisfied customer stay dissatisfied. One of the key rules to business success is satisfying the customer. Ask what you can do to make the customer satisfied -- and then do it, if you can.
  • Do get organized, including developing a daily/weekly/monthly planner. Try not to ever accidently forget a customer appointment, but if it does happen, try to find a way to make amends (such as a discount on the next appointment).
  • Don't fall in the trap thinking that starting your own business will be extremely lucrative and fun; running your own business is a lot of hard work, but it will be great experience for future jobs and college applications.
  • Do be prepared to leave your friends behind when you go to work; and don't ever skip a customer appointment to hang out with your friends -- your business has to come first.
  • Don't spend all the money you make from your business; do put some money aside to save for the future.
