Printing tips

* Don't print slides with dark backgrounds, as it uses lots of printer ink -

* Recycle printer cartridges - see also Xerox Office Product Recycling

* Many companies now recycle laser cartridges too. Long-life cartridges that are usually cheaper to use per page are also available. Some of the newer laser printers, such as the Kyocera Ecosys ones, have a long-lasting print drum and require only toner refills. This reduces both environmental impacts and costs.

* Use both sides of a piece of paper in order to conserve. Keep a scrap paper pile for misprinted or unnecessary documents to either print on or write on.

* Only print the pages of a web or other document that you need. Some PDF document files are hundreds of pages long with unnecessary pages of graphics so print only the ones you need - and only the text.

* Use the Print Preview function to check layout and style instead of printing.

* Use paper with the highest recycled content the manufacturer or supplier recommends for your printer.

* Set sleep mode default times to the lowest available setting that is convenient for your needs.

* Use ink and toner saving settings.

* Don't leave your photocopier on. A photocopier left on overnight uses enough energy to make 1,500 photocopies.

* If you need to keep paper records of your emails as generally required in the legal profession then amend your message sending options so that you attach the message when replying or forwarding emails. This reduces the number of pages that are printed out to the most recent email.
