How to Get a Job in Television

1. Step 1
   Decide on the areas of television you are interested in--writing, acting, news reporting, news anchor, specialized correspondent, production crew, wardrobe and make-up artist and TV host to name a few. There are as many ways to go as there are TV careers. If you already hold a degree, consider your arena of specialization since you already have the qualifications. If you are pursuing the on-camera talent end of it, you will need to go through the process of grooming and auditioning.
   
2. Step 2
   Research the area of television you are interesting in pursuing and take note of the qualifications required for the desired position. Make sure you can or will fulfill those qualifications. Decide on the specific television market you are interested in working. This could include a specific channel, network, local, cable or movie networks.
   
3. Step 3
   Put together your resume, cover letter and credentials for the application process, if that is required for the position you seek. Consider a lower position than you are interested in. Often you need to work your way "up the ladder" in television and make solid connections before taking on any real work. An internship is a great way to get started, and some are paid while others are not.
   
4. Step 4
   Network. The more people you meet in television, the better the chances you have of getting into the television business. Try to get into parties, industry shows and conferences and any other gathering with television people or executives. This will allow you to meet people and learn where the best places in television to work are and the places that are currently needing people.
   
5. Step 5
   Consider auditioning for a reality show. As quickly as these are being created, there are always opportunities to audition for one of them as they usually have travelling casting calls. TV shows are now hosted and staffed by many who started in the reality show genre and many people are now making a living by moving from reality show to reality show.
