4 Ways to Make Friends at Work

by Gina Cappiello, 123 Movers

Starting a new job not only means new responsibilities. It also means a whole new group of peers that you need to get to know. Granted, you can't be friends with everyone (especially at work), but it certainly does help make the days go by quicker when you're friends (or friendly) with your coworkers. Here are some pointers on how to get acquainted with the new work crew:

1. Be friendly and optimistic.

This tip is pretty self-explanatory, but is paramount when making friends with your coworkers at your new job. Say hello to everyone you walk by even if you work in a giant firm or do not know the person. The worst that'll happen is someone will not say hello back. Smile and walk with your head up. People will recognize your upbeat nonverbal statements and smile back. You get what you give, so showing people that you are optimistic and friendly through your actions and demeanor will help in making lasting friendships at your job.

2. Ask questions.

This is another easy one, especially if you are moving to a new town for the job. Ask coworkers about great restaurants, shops, and events that you should know about. Your coworkers will be more than happy to gab about the best places to hit up. They may even show you around town sometime. If you're from the general area but aren't familiar with the city your job is in, ask co-workers where they go for lunch and if you could come along sometime to try some new places out. Your coworkers would be more than happy to have you come along.

3. Get involved with extra-curricular activities within the office.

Most companies have a charitable cause they are involved with or various clubs for workers to get involved with. Find one that suits your interests and join. No clubs or causes to get involved with? Start one of your own. It could be something as simple as a book club. It'll give you a great chance to meet people that you work with that share the same interests as you.

4. Attend social functions.

Is everyone going out for dinner and drinks after work on a Friday? Join them! Going out with coworkers outside of work will help you see everyone's true personalities. It will also give you the opportunity to chat with coworkers about issues beyond work. This is a great way to bond and get to know everyone without the boss or the workday weighing you down. It's also a perfect time to see who you want to associate with more or less.

Regardless of if you're moving to a new town for a job or are starting a new job locally, it's easy (and important) to get to know your new peers. Since they are going to be a big part of your life, it's crucial to get along and get to know each of them well. Try these tips out to help feel better acquainted in your role and job.
