Nothing fits together as nicely as a dream job and awesome apartment. Missing one or both pieces? Read on for some ideas on how to score both in 2010.
Finding the Awesome Apartment:
1. Do plenty of research.
It's easy to see a place you love and decide right off the bat to move into it, but it's not the best way to go about finding the best apartment. Research everything and anything you can, like the complex, city, surrounding areas, and job market. A move to Chicago may sound great in theory but may be an absolute nightmare if you move there and discover some aspects of city life you never considered.
2. Create a cost to move budget.
Make yourself a monthly budget that you are confident you can stick to. From there you can decide how much you have to spend on your dream place. The general rule of thumb for rent is to spend no more than 1/3 of your gross salary. Going over that may result in you not having enough money for other necessary amenities. If your dream place requires more than 1/3 of your salary, see if you can eliminate items from your budget that you don't necessarily need (entertainment costs, cable TV, Internet, etc) to achieve your dream.
3. Be critical but realistic.
Your dream apartment is just that: a dream. When looking for a place, keep in mind your must-haves (heat and hot water included with rent, air conditioning, free parking, etc.) and don't budge. Find a place with everything you want but with little hassles like small rooms or peeling paint? Try looking past the imperfections by being realistic. The best place in your budget may not have every single amenity you desire, but can very well be the dream apartment you have been looking for after some TLC.
Getting the Dream Job:
1. Network.
Don't just blatantly ask for assistance right off the bat. Successful networking can be done with ease by leaving insightful comments on an industry leader's blog and developing a friendly rapport. Once you feel comfortable enough, ask for some one-on-one time to discuss the industry or their thoughts on the job market. It may not lead to a job, but networking is a great way to open doors to potential opportunities.
2. Treat the job hunt like a job.
Spending a few minutes a day scanning websites for jobs is not going to get you anywhere. You have to go about your job hunt daily as if you were getting paid for it in order to be successful. Submitting resumes paired with unique cover letters, networking properly as discussed above, and taking your act to the streets is the only way to go. Somebody will notice your hard work, and you will be rewarded with a great job in time.
3. Be patient.
The key to surviving the dream job hunt is to be patient. An opportunity of a lifetime isn't going to fall into your lap mere seconds after you submit resumes. It takes a lot of hard work and searching to get your dream job. Keep pressing on and fighting to the top for that job. It will all be worth it in the end.
