Organization tips: organizing desks

Desk clutter is a problem. It can be distracting, hard to find what you need when you need it, and an eyesore at the least. A clean, organized desk does not have to be a dream though. By following a few simple tasks, and abiding by them on a daily basis, you will not only acquire a clutter free work area, you will be able to maintain it.

Sort, Purge, and Evaluate

Start by sorting through the clutter that has accumulated on your desk. At this point, do not fret about fancy organizers and such. Just concentrate on sorting and discarding. Remove any items that clearly do not belong in, on, or around your desk. Evaluate how you have your computer and peripherals organized. Are the cords neat and out of the way? If you attach certain items to your computer only occasionally, such as a camera, where do you store the appropriate cords, etc? Do you have a defined area for extras, such as ink and paper? Do you have any specific items that really need to be accessible, yet have no defined area to be?

Evaluate Some More

Is your desk in an optimum work area?

Could you place it elsewhere, if it is not?

Is the desk itself a useable desk?

Can you afford a different desk if it is not, or must you make do with the desk at hand?

How could you alter your current desk to add more storage?

On the Subject of Storage

Evaluate your current storage. What types do you currently have? Do they meet your needs or are they lacking in some specific way? There is a wide array of storage options available for purchase. Every desk owner will have specific needs, but some common and very useable items are some of the most basic. At the top of the list should be a container for pens, pencils, highlighters, etc., either a desktop container or an in-drawer organizer. A file cabinet that is both accessible and convenient. If you just throw things in, it will be neither. Labels, not often thought of as organizers in themselves, is one of the best ways to keep all your hard work on a neat track. Another favorite is a simple three ring binder. Purchase it along with a three whole punch, and as paper comes in, punch it and file it. This works for all those papers that you are not sure what to do with. For papers that are too small to punch in this manner, such as an accumulation of business cards, place into vinyl sleeves before placing in binders. Ones made for kid’s collectible cards work great for organizing numerous small pieces of paper.

Moderation

What does moderation have to do with a clutter free desk? A lot! Do not assume that because one or two shelves are a great addition to your work area, that five or six would be even better. The point of keeping a work area free of clutter is to make it a pleasant place where, at the least, you will not mind being there. If you overdo the storage instead of de-cluttering, you are not really fixing anything. Only put out as much storage as you really need and get into the habit of ‘filing’ as you go. On this note, make sure you do have a wastebasket within reach of your desk. If something is trash, toss it immediately.

Pleasing to the Eye

Once you have organized your desk, keeping it that way will take work and willpower. One way to boost your willpower is to make your work area pleasing to the eye, through color and small touches, such as a framed photo, or an object that has some special meaning. The keyword here to follow is small, nothing too obtrusive. If you are comfortable in your work area, you will not mind taking a few minutes throughout the day to keep it that way.
